Item description

VNITAGE TAYLOR, SMITH AND TAYLOR USA RARE BLUE CASTLE PATTERN 10" DINNER PLATE 1936 DISCONTINUED PATTERN This is an extremely beautiful plate, a family heirloom. It is a design of a european castle with what would appear to be oriental gardens in bright skipper blue on an ivory background. It has a scalloped edge with a raised garland pattern on the inner rim. The plates image was designed by landscape artist J. Palin Thorley by Taylor, Smith and Taylor, which was founded in 1899 in West Virginia. Thorley was very popular in the 30's and 40's. This plate does show signs of light crazing on the left side edge near the inner rim in the glaze. I also see knife scratches when I twist the plate, so it must have been used as actual dinnerware at one time. The reverse side of the plate also has crazing much more than the front....and has two 1/4" chips where I am sure this plate sat on a metal plate stand. It has three other minor teeny chips. None of the chips on the reverse can be seen from the front. I just spoke to a pottery porcelin restoration specialist, who said all the faults in this plate could easily be repair to museum quality by a reputable restoration specialist. I believe it would be worth it for a plate this rare and old, if you have interest. The reverse says "Taylor, Smith, Taylor, USA # 5 36 2" I just learned that the numbers to the left indicate that this plate was made in May 1936. You can view the reverse side of this plate here. All this is to be expected from a plate that has been in use for the past 70 years. By googling on the net, I did find some plates that were available for sale, but all are in similar condition. The pattern is really beautiful and hard to find in the blue...it was made in pink and green also but, without the raised garland pattern found on the blue. If you a re a china junkie, this would be a fun pattern to search the net to collect a full set....because, it won't be easy. The pink dish on replacements sells at 20.99...so my starting price will be gauged from there. Replacements.com does list this pattern on their site, but, unfortunately does not have any pieces available at this time. Who knows this might be the only one available at the moment This item weighs 2lbs, final shipping costs will include handling charges listed under booth details. please email me for shipping and handling costs and your preferred method of shipping or go to USPS.com and add the handling charge listed under booth details. Suggest media mail for books. Please Note: Almost all the items that are sold in my auction are Vintage in Nature, even if they are new in the box....they are from my aunt's estate...I use my best ability to describe any faults I see, if you want more photos, please request them, I will be happy to provide them to you. If an item is Mint to my eye, it still implies it has seen a baseline of wear due to it age.......VINTAGE, means that it has been around for awhile. Please ask any questions you may have before bidding. Additional photos can be provided, please ask.
