Item description

Circa 1950's Stig Lindberg White Tin Glaze Earthenware Bowl Excellent Vintage Condition This Modernist bowl belonged to my aunt and it has had one owner. It has all the correct studio markings and I have sent photos of the plate both front and back to the marks4ceramics.com website for authentication. I received the following answer today 1/12/09...which the winning bidder may have a copy of to authenticate this piece. "Hello Deborah and thanks for your inquiry and clear photos, Also, thank you for your kind comments...Thanks again and regards, Elizabeth" This Swedish company has been documented in many different spellings, the most widely accepted one as being the correct one amongst collectors is GUSTAVSBERG or GUSTAFSBERG. You will find several examples of their marks in our database by using our NAME SEARCH feature for GUSTAVSBERG and will also be able to see a brief Fact Sheet on the company. We are certain that your specific piece was indeed made ca 1950s as noted and it was made at the Studio of Stig Lindberg. I did this, because I was concerned as this pattern is different from many that I have seen coming from the Stig Lindberg. I spent hours on the net trying to find the tulip designation you will see on the reverse of the plate, which someone on ebay indicates was painted by helina pikanen. I received this comment from elizabeth on 1/14/09: "On the Guvstaberg mark [tulip], we will list it as simply a Lindberg mark as there are just no records of the Artist mentioned by the eBay seller. Please note that Lindberg was an individual Artist himself (not a Studio) and was trained by Kage. So we have difficulty imagining that this mark was anyone else's. The symbol may instead be an Anchor but embelished with some extra lines or a crown on top (?). Thanks again and regards, Elizabeth" This bowl has the proper hand with the G indicating it is an original by Stig Lindberg, a tulip mark, SWEDEN F/10.101, plus one other mark above the hand which appears to be a V or K in a circle....which I can barely read. Then there are some letters and numbers imprinted into the piece that say A or R, 3 or 6, 9. see a photo of this here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/konoponopdesigns/3185961837/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/konoponopdesigns/3186802986/ It has a white tin glaze, which appears to have crazing on the front, which is very pronounced and very faintly on the reverse which you need a magnifying glass to see. see a close up of this here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/konoponopdesigns/3185961825/ There are no other chips, cracks, scratches on the face or other imperfections that I can see on this bowl. It is in remarkably good vintage condition for its age. It measures 9 " in diameter x 1 3/4" high. Very bright cheerful colors. You can see an additional photo of the front of the bowl here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/konoponopdesigns/3186802924/ This is an INVESTMENT PIECE......Stig Lindberg pieces continue to gain in popularity and prices for his works continue to rise on the collectibles market. It would make a great gift....for anyone that collects Scandinavian or Moderne Art Pottery or a great addition to your collection of Scandinavian Art Pottery.
