Item description

BLACK LAMB AND GREY FALCON, Volume 2 by Rebecca West The Viking Press, First Edition, October 1941 Condition: Very Good in Very Good dust jacket This intimate portrait of Yugoslavia and its peoples was written by one of England's leading novelists. For several years, Rebecca West "went on long pilgrimages through the country of the Serbs, Croates abd Slovenes....talking to leaders and peasants, visiting churches and schools, lakes and mountains, ruins and modern cities,...feeling her way back into their racial past, into their culture and modes of life, into their differences and their likenesses." The result was a monumental work of 1181 pages, of which this is the second half. (Since this is non-fiction, this book stands alone better than would a novel.) Illustrated with photographic plates and with a Bibliography and Index. The work has not had another edition and thus has become scarce over the 70 years since its publication, and even the individual volumes are in demand by admirers of West's writings. This is a lovely copy, but for fading of the lettering on the spine, a short tear and wrinkling on one page edge and barely any other wear. (The front cover pastedown is in nice condition, no markings were observed and the binding is tight.) The jacket has some edge wear and wear along the spine and shallow chipping on the spine ends.
