Item description

Root out of Dry Ground by Argye M. Briggs 1948 HC/DJ Root out of Dry Ground Argye M. Briggs Chicago: Peoples Book Club Copyright 1948 323 pages color illustration end papers Book Club edition The binding is in good condition, the pages are clean but lightly tanned and there is a name and date 1949 written on the front end paper. The blue cover shows light wear, the jacket has some edge wear and chipping. Good in acceptable dust-jacket. Hardcover. This is a deeply compelling story of fortitude and faith, of a girl's growth and a woman's full maturity. It's theme dramatically reveals the force of beauty that is sometimes hidden and unsuspected and the power and reward of selfless love. It is the story, first of all, of Jansie, who, at seventeen, knew very little of the beauty and gaiety that should belong to youth. And except for the promise that seemed to beckon from the shining Blue Mountains in the distance, she had seen no hope for her own happiness in this world. But it is also the story of Chris, the foundling who was left in Jansie's arms one bitter Christmas Eve, and who Jansie raised with devoted care. In the years in which Chris grew up, there were times when she needed all of Jansie's common sense and vigilance and affection. But then there was the time while Chris was at college, when she needed Jansie most and Jansie wasn't there. Handsome, dashing young Jack Duncan was offering Chris a world of glamour and luxury.
