More about this item

SONG OF THE SWALLOWS very early printing (1950) with half-page watercolour from 1961 by Leo Politi New York: Scribner's, (first edition was published in 1949), early printing probably from 1950 (contains 1948 copyright on the title page); dust jacket mentions only "Juanita" (1948) on the rear jacket panel flap and not "Boat".(1950). Book is bound in green reinforced cloth with dark green stamped picture of little Juan watching a mother bird, no medal on jacket: small Best's Studio, Yosemite sticker (Ansel Adam's Gallery) perhaps explains why Caldecott medal was is pasted on front panel of jacket (the book won this award in 1950). 1950. Hardcover. Very good dust jacket with some silverfish holes on the spine and dust jacket edges, but the title can be read. Book is near fine to fine jacket with a bit of edge-wear and rubbing, and minuscule closed tears to edges. Book has light edge-wear to spine ends. The dust jacket is unclipped showing a price of 2.95. Little Juan wonders where the swallows go from Capistrano and he also learns to sing "La Golondrina." Importantly, the 1950 Caldecott Award book medal is affixed to the front of the dust jacket. There is a nice watercolour half-page painting on the front free end-paper of a bird and flowers and where Politi has also written "Leo Politi" and "Springtime 1961." Beautiful!
