Thus begins the story of the lad who lived in fashionable Caesarea Philippi at the time of Christ. Stephen was the son of wealthy parents but he was not a happy boy. Illness had made him an object of pity to his beautiful mother who, with the Creeks' worship of physical perfection, wondered why a son of hers should have been so afflicted. Demetrios, his father, however, had seen the Nazarene and had heard about the miracles He performed. Perhaps He would help Stephen. Stephen's illness struck him down one day just as he and his father reached the outskirts of the crowd surrounding Christ. And then, out of the nightmare and pain, the lad "looked up and saw a face." All of Stephen's story is colored by this meeting with Jesus, but it a gay, happy tale, full of the good times and adventures enjoyed by the boys and girls in that long ago era. Aside from the absorbing story itself, there has been drawn an unforgettable picture of the cultural and social aspects of the time and of the place, Caesarea Philippi. The settings are historically correct, the boys and girls convincing in their timeless love of fun and hazard, and the whole touched with a spiritual quality of rare beauty.
