Item description

We are pleased to offer for your consideration this amazingly vivid view of the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, CO, on a full bleed linen postcard, published by the Sanborn Souvenir Co. of Denver, CO. This particular view is of Cathedral Spires (although it is entitled "Ruins of Montezumas Temple). Garden of the Gods is a public park located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The outstanding geologic features of the park are the ancient sedimentary beds of red, blue, purple, and white sandstones, conglomerates and limestone that were deposited horizontally, but have now been tilted vertically and faulted by the immense mountain building forces caused by the uplift of the Pikes Peak massif. Evidence of past ages; ancient seas, eroded remains of ancestral mountain ranges, alluvial fans, sandy beaches and great sand dune fields can be read in the rocks. A spectacular shear fault can be observed where the Tower of Babel (Lyons Sandstone) contacts the Fountain Formation.[1]. There are many fossils to be seen: marine forms, plant fossils, and some dinosaur fossils. Sanborn Souvenir was in business from 1920 until 1976 and it was a publisher of books and postcards of the American West, but mostly of Colorado and Wyoming. They first produced real photo postcards carrying the Sanborn name. They latter went on to produce tinted halftone postcards and eventually photochromes. The front of this card features a view of the Cathedral Spires in their fiery red sandstone hues surrounded at the base by the contrasting greenery of the forest of the valley floor and the crystal blue sky over head. the top left bears the caption on three lines, "607 -- Ruins of Montezumas Temple, Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak Region, Colorado" The 607 is the series number of this card set. The back of the card is a divided back postcard with the publisher's info as the division and in the top left is a brief description of the view on the front. The stamp box bears the Sanborn Souvenir ware number, "3B42-N". This card is obviously part of a souvenir set and the top bears the perforations where this particular view was removed from the folder for mailing. This card is in excellent condition with slight bumping on one end and the perforations at the other end are still crisp and sharp. There are no folds or creases and no extraneous writing marks on the card at all. This card was never posted in the mail. This card will look great among your collection of Garden of the Gods memorabilia, postcards from Colorado Springs, Colorado, Midwest America's National and Public parks and Sanborn Souvenir products.
