Item description

THE LITTLE PRINCE by Antoine De Saint-Exupery New York: Reynal Hitchcock, 1943 Hardcover in original smooth light green cloth stamped in black. Small 4to. 91 numbered pages with the five line colophon on the last unnumbered page. A nice copy with very minimal wear to corners or spine ends. This is a much better copy of this book than is usually found. The interior pages are clean and white without foxing, smudges or writing. The book has a bindet’s error lacking one page number on both sides 61 and 62. The pagewas never tipped into this book. I examined several other Reynal copies and it was a tipped-in page. A few of the pages in this nice copy have light creases that a binding machine would have made. There’s no evidence of the page being removed or glue remnants; a publisher's binding error- a “collector’s oddity.” It is not the page that had the crow shown in the later printings. No crow is shown on that page i this copy. I’ve compared the newer edition illustrations against those in this copy. These Reynal first editions have a “vibrant life” all their own as a result of the printing process that was used in the 1940’s lithography printing process. There is a small light, what looks like a tea stain, at the bottom inside rear endpaper hinge, but only fades out at three pages in, not affecting text or illustrations. Included on this book is a replication first issue dust jacket from the John Anthony Miller Studio in Ventura. It is signed on the verso edge in pencil by Miller. Archival inks and paper are used by this fine artist and each jacket is hand-printed and inspected for quality. It is enclosed in a Mylar jacket protector. First edition fourth printing. A nice copy well above the condition this popular masterpiece is usually found in. These Reynal first editions are getting scarcer and the price keeps increasing. (I saw one listed in a dust jacket for 4000 and several priced just under that.) The faux first issue dust jacket I made for the Reynal first editions is of excellent quality using expensive light-fast inks and archival art paper. I am an artist as well as rare book seller. This book has all points of a first edition first printing, including the five-line colophon at the end of the book; red rose on page 27 faces left; no flying crow on page 63. Vivid illustrations throughout by author produced by lithography of that day that shows a unique richness that just does not appear, in my opinion, in the later printings.l
