From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 2-- One chilly autumn day, Rabbit, wishing to impress Mouse, claims that he stays warm in the winter by flying south with the birds. Not to be outdone, Mouse claims the same. When the snow begins to fall, however, and the two friends are still in the frozen north, they decide to drop in on Bear's warm cave. Growling that his cave is not a "home for frozen ragamuffins," Bear allows them to stay only on the condition that they tell him bedtime stories about their exotic trip south. Everyone dozes off, and, after a cozy winter's nap, the two friends scamper away. Bear, realizing that he has been tricked, is angry, until he decides that he, too, can make up stories about flying south. This humorous tale about good-natured braggodocio and quick wits, complemented by stunningly evocative watercolor illustrations, makes for a nice bedtime read-aloud. Language Notes Text: English, German Card catalog description Rabbit and Mouse spend the winter with Bear in his cave telling him wonderful but untrue stories of how they can fly and the things they have seen.
