When Simon Weddle rents his Illinois farmlands to a band of Mormons moving west, he finds himself in opposition to the townspeople of Corinth and his wife Clorinda. Drawn to the unpopular cause of the immigrants, he visits their holy city of Nauvoo during the days of its siege by marauding Gentiles and is a witness to the destruction of the Mormon Temple by fire. Although they make no effort to convert him, the Mormons have influenced his life with their examples of singleness of purpose, industry, and uncompromising zeal for certain "strange beliefs." It is perhaps due to the impact of their ideas that Simon creates for himself a strange double life: one with his childless mate in Cornith and another in the groves of Missouri with Clorinda's sister-in-law, Rachel, to whom he has "sealed himself" in the Mormon tradition. To Rachel he gives protection and love; in return, she gives him children and fulfills his need to perpetuate his name, his wealth, and his enterprises. Simon's peculiar code of honor, the tragic death of Rachel, and Clorinda's ultimate decision make this novel an extraordinary recreation of a time and a landscape as well as the men and women who people it.
