Cutbank, Montana Territory, was without any question one of the coldest places in the West. It was also cow country. But the winters were hard, so the loss of a single cow or calf could spell the difference between survival and disaster to a small sodbuster. Therefore when old Return Elder stole a critter worth all of thirty dollars, they hung him promptly and casually. Which changed a lot of things in Cutbank. For the old man had a nephew named Buck Elder. And when Buck arrived in town he brought a pair of hard-eyed friends along. Sheriff Bert Perkins could guess what the future held and did everything he could to head it off; but he failed. So the war came, and the lawman was caught right smack in the middle.
