He nursed lepers, and begged for the poor. During his lifetime, St. Francis restored several churches. After gaining the approval of Pope Innocent III, Francis founded the Franciscan Order. On July 16, 1228 he was proclaimed a Saint by the next Pope, Gregory IX. The next day, the Pope laid the foundation stone for the Basilica of Saint Francis, in Assisi, Italy.
