In this story of the Civil War, Mr. Altsheler gives an impressive picture of General Robert E. Lee, carefully drawn from original sources, including personal narratives of men yet living who are able to sketch from memory interesting bits concerning his splendid character, his appearance, and personality that can be found nowhere else in the records of the history of the stirring times of '61-'65. The story opens with Lee's retreat after his repulse at Gettysburg. Harry Kenton, a gallant young Confederate officer, the hero of some of the earlier stories in the Civil War Series, is sent to Richmond and there he becomes involved in a dangerous and mysterious situation in which a Northern spy figures prominently. He returns to the front in time to take part in the important battle in which Grant and Lee meet for the first time in the battles of the Wilderness. The historic details are accurate in every particular, and help to build a thrilling romance of one of the most tragic periods in the life of the Nation.
