NOT EX.-LIBRARY. Truman Capote was born in New Orleans in 1924. He was a major American writer of the 20th century, whose works include both fiction and non-fiction, whose -- er, flamboyant lifestyle made him an iconic figure and a celebrity-about-town in 1970s Manhattan, moving easily in both the literary "smart set" and the gay community. (He was openly homosexual at a time when almost nobody else was “out of the closet.”) He squired such famous faces as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to events like the famous masked “Black and White Balls,” which he organized. Although he is considered a member of the “Southern Gothic” school of fiction, his two most famous works are anything but: He wrote the original novel on which the Audrey Hepburn film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, was based, and In Cold Blood, which might be considered “Southern Gothic” if it were actually fiction (or set in the South instead of Kansas). He also produced some of the finest travel writing of the era, and several other novels and scripts – and hundreds of articles for The New Yorker and other publications. In In Cold Blood, Truman Capote invented the "non-fiction novel," and created a whole new genre of literature. Experts say the book permanently broke down the barrier between crime reportage and serious writing. It utilizes literary tools -- Capote was a great writer (if a rather eccentric human being) -- to examine the true case of an apparently random act of brutal murder. In 1959, four members of the Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas, were savagely shot with a shotgun held just a few inches from their faces; their blood was spattered all over the walls of their modest home. There was no clear motive and almost no clues. Capote minutely recounts the details of the case, and goes back in time to depict the lives of the victims and the suspects. He re-creates the underlying story with journalistic precision and clarity, but with literary graces seldom found in modern fiction -- or non-fiction, for that matter. Both his style and the substance of the story -- which gripped the nation's attention for months (even without 24-hour-news on cable TV!) -- make compelling, even riveting, reading. It will stay with you for a long time, no matter how hard you try to forget the grisly details. The final "thud-snap" (I'll leave it to Capote to define that term) is may be the graphic book-ending in all literature. Even those who know what happened -- they will be folks who read it before, or are old enough to remember the sensational case -- will find this tale suspenseful and empathetic, to both the victims and (in the language of television crime shows) the "perps." Maybe you remember reading In Cold Blood, maybe you have a beat-up paperback in your shelves somewhere. Maybe you're a Capote fan, or just like good literature...or grisly murder mysteries. Or maybe you know someone who fits one of these categories and would love a nice copy of this famous, ground-breaking classic. (Christmas is coming, you know!) Whatever the reason, now is the time and this is your chance to own a truly beautiful copy at a very reasonable price! TEACHERS AND PARENTS: LOOKING FOR MORE GOOD DEALS ON CHILDRENS BOOKS?
