Item description

We are pleased to offer for your consideration this whimsical Oilette postcard view of an Irish cottage vignette with stereotypical shamrock and leprechaun-like scene published by Raphael Tuck and Sons ofร‚ England. Raphael Tuck were major postcard publishers and introduced the Oilette Series of paintings on post cards in 1903. These were organized into sets and all cards in the same set have the same number, and would have been issued at the same time. The Oilette series depicted painted views from all over the many colonies of the British Empire. These cards were printed through the tricolor process in England, and sort of resembled a poorly done oil painting (hence the name, Oilette). Raphael Tuck Sons were in business from 1866 until well into the 1960's. They were considered to be the official postcard makers for the Royal Family and Art Publishers to their majesties, the King and Queen, as is proudly noted on each and every postcard they made. The front of this postcard features a vignette of an Irish cottage within an oval vignette which is surrounded by and artist interpretation of shamrocks, and a view of a typical Leprechaun with a bundle tied up in a handkerchief on a pole slung over his shoulder. Below the oval Vignette is the caption, "Greetings from the Emerald Isle." and withing the oval is the caption, "An Irish Cottage." The back is a divided postcard with the Tuck logo within the stamp box. The publisher's info is along the left margin which also contains the title of this card and the series number, 9565. The bottom left states that the card was "Printed in England" and the top left bears the Royal Seal "By Appointment". This card is in near excellent condition with slight bumps on the corners. The card was never mailed and bears no writing at all. This card will look lovely among your collection of holiday postcards, St Patrick's Day postcards and mementos of Ireland as well as products of R.Tuck and Sons.
