Vintage Brer Rabbit Uncle Remus Brooch Pin AB Frost Illustration Rare
Joel Chandler Harris
American South
Overalls Suit Vest Corn Cob
African American Folktales
Small Little Miniature
This is an adorable little vintage pin of Brer Rabbit, based on the illustrations by Arthur Burdett Frost (A.B. Frost) from Joel Chandler Harris’ “Uncle Remus and His Friends” a book of Old Plantation Stories, Songs and Ballads, published in 1892. The Uncle Remus tales began as trickster stories in West Africa. They were retold in the American South during the slave period and after the Civil War. The folk tales included the adventures of Br’er Rabbit and his enemies, Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear. Brer Rabbit continually outsmarts the bigger animal enemies. Joel Chandler Harris started publishing the stories in 1879 from stories he heard as a young man in Georgia. Disney released the movie “Song of the South”, in 1946, which was based on the book, and the movie made famous the song “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah”, which won the 1947 Academy Award for best Song.
This Brer Rabbit brooch or pin appears to be made from a silver-tone metal, possibly pewter with a very light gold wash on the top. It is quite small and measures only 1 inches tall and of an inch wide. I have not been able to find another one like it anywhere. There are plenty of pins using the Disney Cartoon Brer Rabbit, but none based on the illustration by Frost. I have shown the pin next to examples of the illustrations by Frost and you can see how accurate the details are on the brooch.
This pin is in great vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. There is a slight bend to the pin on the back, but it doesn’t affect the secure closing of the clasp. Please look at the photos as they are part of the description and show the details better than I can describe.
This will be sent 1st Class Mail with Tracking/Delivery Confirmation and Insurance. For more information about me and booth policies, click on Starfisher's Stars at the top of this page, it will take you to the main page of my booth. Thanks for visiting!
