Item description

ALL ABOARD Or Life on the Lake (A Sequel to "The Boat Club") by OLIVER OPTIC. Hurst Company, New York. Undated (preface dated 1855)circa 1900. Hardcover, 184 pages plus publisher's advertisments. William Taylor Adams (1822-1897) was a noted academic, author, and Massachusetts state legislator. He was born in Medway, Massachusetts. He became a teacher in the Boston, Massachusetts public schools in 1845, and remained in that capacity through 1865. He served as a member of the School Board of Dorchester, Massachusetts, for 14 years. In 1869, he became a member of the Massachusetts General Court. He wrote many books of fiction for boys under the pseudonym "Oliver Optic," including All Aboard; or, Life on the Lake (1855), Poor and Proud; or, The Fortunes of Katy Redburn (1858), The Soldier Boy; or, Tom Somers in the Army (1863), The Birthday Party: A Story for Little Folks (1864), Outward Bound; or, Young America Afloat (1867), Now or Never; or, The Adventures of Bobby Bright (1872), Taken by the Enemy (1888), Little by Little; or, The Cruise of the Flyaway (1888), On The Blockade (1890), Within the Enemy's Lines (1890), Stand by the Union (1891), Fighting for the Right (1893), A Victorious Union (1893), Haste and Waste; or, the Young Pilot of Lake Champlain (1894), and Across India; or, Live Boys In The Far East (1895). Although the book is undated, this edition certainly wasn't published in 1855. The Hurst Publish Company operated from 1871 to 1919. Verifying through an old publisher's catalog, the Hurst Publishing Company was as the address of 395-399 Broadway, New York as listed in this book from 1900 to 1919. Even the publsher's advertisments in the back provide nothing definitive (except for the publisher's address.) From the binding style, the cheap print and paper type and the general condition of the interior, I'd say the book was published pretty close to 1900, and I don't think I'd be far off. Still, a nice vintage Oliver Optic book. BOOK DESCRIPTION/CONDITION: No Jacket. 12mo - over 6Â" - 7Â" tall. ca. 1900. Undated (circa 1900). Light green tweed cloth hardcover illustrated in gold, orange-red and black, similar on spine. General cover rubbing wear, some small marks and spot stains on back board. Inscription in pencil (but no date) on FFEP. Hinges starting, binding in good shape. Ink uneven on print type. Some small spots of light foxing and smudging scattered throughout. Last ad page has a couple of open tears. Overall good. 5" x 7 3/8" x 1 18"
