ABOUT A.A. Milne (Alan Alexander Milne) British Author. (b.1882 - d.1956)
"Best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh and for various children's poems. Milne was a noted writer, primarily as a playwright, before the huge success of Pooh overshadowed all his previous work.
Alan Alexandra Milne was bought up in Kilburn, London at a small independent school run by his father, Henley House, with his brothers David Barrett Milne and Kenneth John Milne. While studying there he found inspiration in one of his teachers, H.G. Wells, who himself would go on to be a famous writer and a close friend to Alan.
From 1905 through the mid 1920s, Milne published 18 plays and 3 novels, including the murder mystery The Red House Mystery (1922). His son was born in August 1920 and in 1924 Milne produced a collection of children's poems When We Were Very Young, which were illustrated by Punch staff cartoonist E. H. Shepard. First published in 1925 was a collection of short stories for children called A Gallery of Children which among a few others, became a part of the Winnie-the-Pooh story books.
Winnie-the-Pooh was published in 1926, then a second collection of nursery rhymes, Now We Are Six, was published in 1927. With the publication of The House at Pooh Corner in 1928, Alan claimed this would be his last book. Alan realized that writing was his dream and in 1929 wrote "Toad of Toad Hall" based on the story told by Kenneth Grahame's "The Wind in the Willows". The last book Alan published was "Year in, Year out" in 1952 which proved to be a great success.
In 1961, Dorothy sold the film rights to Walt Disney, who created what we see today as the Winnie the Pooh animated stories.
Today Milne's books still continue to be best sellers even after his death, and yet his classic pooh stories will still be children's favorites and his play "Toad of Toad Hall" will still be enjoyed as a Christmas classic." --[ed] W WTP.UK
ABOUT THE ARTIST
H. Willebeek Le Mair (b. 23 Apr 1889 - d. 1966). Dutch born illustrator.
Henriette Willebeek Le Mair was born in Rotterdam, Holland, 1889. Creativity was always encouraged in Henriatta's family. Her father liked to sketch and would often draw pictures for the children and read them stories. Her mother spent a lot of her time painting and writing verse. Le Mair often penned her name and signed her work SAIDA.
Le Mair began publishing at quite a young age. Her first book, Premi'es Rondes Enfantines (1904), was published in France when she was just 15 years old.
She collaborated with her mother on three books of verse when she was 16 years old and her mother wrote the text and Henrietta illustrated them. She was especially active in illustration during 1911-17.
In 1925, Le Mair was commissioned by the Colgate company to produce a series of illustrations for magazine advertising. The public imagination was so captured by these that A.A. Milne wrote an accompanying collection of short stories - A Gallery of Children.
The last known book that Le Mair illustrated was Christmas Carols for Young Children (1946). She lived until 1966 but was not active as an illustrator in the last 20 years of her life.
