Description: From the original description: "The river Niagara receives at its source the waters of all the great lakes, with the exception of Ontario, together with their numberless tributaries, many of which take their rise in those far distant regions of the north and west , which Yankee enterprise has not yet visited. At its immediate entrance the river is about three miles in width. Lake Erie lies to the south and south-west, its waters spreading beyond the reach of human vision, and hardly less impressive than the ocean itself. As you enter the river, which from its source to its mouth runs in a northerly direction, there lies upon the right the city of Buffalo full of busy life, and on the left the tenantless and deserted ruins of Fort Erie, distinguished in the last war with Great Britain as the scene of one of those few brave and victorious struggles, which redeem the American arms from utter disgrace upon our northern frontiers. Passing the entrance of the river it suddenly narrows to about a quarter of a mile in width, and rushes with great velocity, now foaming over the rapids, now gliding in a solid mass of deep but brilliant green, for about four miles, when, as if weary of the racer it expands upwards of three miles in width, and, combining the breadth of the Mississippi with the clearness of Lake George, glides with a scarcely perceptible motion towards the head of Grand Island... ... It is three miles from the Spot where the figures in the engraving are placed, to the two prominent cliff in the Centre, and Seven more to the mouth of the liver. The lofty cliff upon the left and upon which the new monument to General Brock is in the process of erection, is well known in our history as "Queenstown Heights," and is founded upon and faced by a huge mass of solid stone, called by Father Hennepin, who has given us the earliest description of the falls, "the great rock." The cliff upon the right was named by him, and is still called "the three mountains." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin2001 Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy ! TURKEY Trebizond on Black Sea - 1887 Wood Engraving

This old engraving has substantiated and stimulated a recent interest of mine; this physical thing now hangs in front of my reading chair, and I have found the digital copy of the charming old book from which it was cut (VOYAGES AND TRAVELS OR SCENES IN MANY LANDS VOLUME
de Colange, Leo (Ed.)).
Published by E.W. Walker, Boston, MA (1887))
I recommend enjoying some of the 19th century paintings under "Trabzon in art" in commons.wikipedia., which is where I first discovered this one. In some of these it is the artists viewpoint of serious (not ) peacefulness that I especially enjoy, and now this is substantiated, in front of my reading chair.
