Leveling the playing field for your brand

Leveling the playing field for your brand

Today we're excited to be launching a new feature that will empower small seller brands to compete on the same playing field as the big guys.  In this blog, we'll be referring to "brands" specifically in the context of who created/manufacturer the product in question.

As part of Bonanza's new product catalog (aka "kaleidoguide"), we have been inventorying every brand that exists across our 5 million products past and present.  We now have catalog pages for tens of thousands of different brands, with customer ratings in place for more and more brands every day.

Who does this update matter for?

Any merchant who creates their own products (i.e., handmade vendors) or those who have created their own supply chain to get products created on their behalf (i.e., many of our custom t-shirt sellers) can benefit from building their own brand identity.  The benefits of owning a brand will no longer be limited to corporations with factories and warehouses.  What are those benefits?  Glad you asked.

Benefits of building a brand

  • Build a reputation for quality that leads to positive customer reviews, higher sellthrough, and more sales
  • Get customers hooked on your brand, charge a premium price for your product
  • Opportunity for positive word of mouth as your buyers talk to their friends about your brand
  • Can offer your brand on multiple selling platforms and have it universally recognized

In many ways, the benefits of building a reputation for your brand are similar to the benefits of building a reputation for your store.  But whereas a store is usually constained to just a single marketplace, a brand can span many marketplaces and add value to all of them.  Look at what you're wearing right now and it's probably an assortment of brands you will purchase again and again... whether from their own store or from a third party merchant.  Having a popular, respected brand is the most powerful means to grow your business into a juggernaut.

Setting up your brand gets you listed in Bonanza's kaleidoguide (product catalog), with equal billing alongside the mega-brands

How do I setup my brand on Bonanza?  Where does it show up?

There is now a link from the left side of "My Bonanza" to "Manage seller brand."  Clicking this link allows you to either setup your brand or disable it.  Disabling a brand will hide the link from the side of the "My Bonanza" page.  Setting up your brand allows you to upload a logo for your brand, give us the name for it brand, and give buyers a taste of what your brand is, where it comes from, what inspires it, etc. (in the brand description).

After setting up your brand, you can also specify which categories your brand's items fall into.  We will then use this information to match up your Bonanza inventory to your brand identity, so when buyers browse kaleidoguide, they'll see your brand, its items, and whatever reviews customers have left for it.  Note that it may take several days for our catalog processor to fully map your items into the appropriate catalog entry, but as you add new items to your store, they will be cataloged automatically.

Setting up your brand on Bonanza

Beyond Bonanza

Sellers that manufacture their own products tend to be ferociously entrepreneurial, and as a company built by entrepreneurs, we are pulling for the little brand, big time.  As such, if we get enough sellers setting up their own brands, we'll be investigating the possibility of letting sellers export their brand reputation (customer reviews) into their own website, or onto the other sites at which they sell.  After all -- the point of having a brand is being able to bring it with you and grow its reputation to be larger than any single store.  We'd love to see our handmade sellers grow to a scale where Bonanza, Etsy, and their own site are all part of a comprehensive strategy to conquer their slice of the world.

Fantastic opportunity for those who create their own products. I really like that.
I am going to have to find something to make so I can have my own brand.
I do not see the Manage Seller Link to the left of My Bonanza. And I did log out and log back in.
And the kaleioguide? Where will that search be placed?

bharding says in response: 07/11/13 at 12:19:05

Kaleidoguide is already active at http://www.bonanza.com/catalog

Weird that the link didn’t show up for you. It should be on My Bonanza alongside the other selling links on the left side of the page. (Of course, with how delayed my response is here you probably already found it…doh)

How would this branding be beneficial to a seller of vintage items such as myself? How would I utilize it?

bharding says in response: 07/11/13 at 12:17:50

Short answer: it wouldn’t. This update only applies to sellers who create their own wares, for vintage sellers like yourself it changes nothing.

SNCCreations says: 07/10/13 at 17:32:16

Wow! This is exciting!

KJZacks says: 07/10/13 at 19:05:07

I like this Idea, but I see I have some work to do.
Our Clothespin Bags are listed as Dupont Bags, that just won’t work for me. Lol
I think it will be Great in the long run.

bharding says in response: 07/11/13 at 12:20:47

Doh! Yeah, we’re still working on teaching the catalog to disambiguate between multiple brands when it finds two possible matches. Your anecdote does give me a good idea on how to improve the situation though…stay tuned, I suspect we’ll have your items cataloged correctly within the next couple days.

A “Brand” requires Registration in order to be legally recognised , otherwise the term is invalid. Does bonanza intend to underwrite the costs involved in doing so ?

HodgePodgeLodge says: 07/11/13 at 06:42:25

Ditto what MyTexas Treasures and LavenderLady questioned!

oldbaloo says: 07/11/13 at 06:49:55

Super exciting! I’ve been gradually making up a whole line of Barbie furniture, so this might be my big chance…. Do I have to have a name for my ‘brand’? Will there be help to walk me through all this? Oh wow…Thanks, Bonanza!

bharding says in response: 07/11/13 at 12:28:54

At this point, it’s pretty informal. As you grow your brand to become ever larger, you’ll want to do stuff like apply for a trademark (as cathnwilliamsbooks alludes to), but all you need to get started is to just decide on a name. You can also upload a logo if you feel inspired. But I’d say take it slow and do the hard work as it becomes necessary. Can’t wait to see your progress on this buddy!

I am so excited about this feature. Remember when Google needed to have brands and were getting picky about was and was not going to show in searches? I wrote to them explaining my original designs. I already had my DBA registered since we moved here in 1993 so sent them that even though they didn’t ask for it. That did the trick.

bharding says in response: 07/11/13 at 12:30:53

Power to the people! If this leads to an explosion of original brands, I think that we will all be better off for it. You’re off to a great start.

divinefabricsnmore says: 07/11/13 at 08:59:57

If sellers are allowing Bonanza to help them ’’brand’’ their product(s), does that mean in the long run, or in some fashion that Bonanza will somehow claim some kind of ‘’partnership or ownership’’ of same? I’d be VERY careful about allowing any one site have me use their site to ’’brand’’ my products-but that’s just IMHO.

bharding says in response: 07/11/13 at 12:33:50

It seems to me like our gesture to voluntarily allow sellers to take their brand/reputation with them to their own site and other marketplaces should be a pretty clear indication of how we see our role here.

But because I know benefit of the doubt can be hard to come by, I shall clarify: The brand isn’t ours, it’s the sellers. Our role is just building the tools to get exposure for the brand and help it build its reputation.

MyTexasTreasures says: 07/11/13 at 10:08:52

Dee, Bonanza is just allowing sellers to use their brand names for their products, not creating a brand for them.
Sellers must follow state rules for registering a business, can buy a dot com for a few dollars if they chose, and they have a viable business. There is no legal requirement to trademark or copyright a business name, brand, or logo.
All Bonanza is doing is allowing sellers who create products to use his/her business name when listing. They would have no ownership of the name anymore than ownership of our store names.

bharding says in response: 07/11/13 at 12:35:09

Well put.

KJZacks says: 07/11/13 at 12:42:00

bharding, Thank you very much.

Rdesigns says: 07/12/13 at 07:43:30

Cool.

FrogAndBearCreations says: 07/12/13 at 10:13:58

Well I did the create portion of my brand so now what happens?

Oma'sPlatz says: 07/12/13 at 17:35:25

I didn’t know that catalog existed before now. I don’t have my own brand (yet!) so I searched the catalog for nationally known brands, such as Jones NY, Rafaella, etc, and items came up made by these brands. I tend to wear certain brands all the time because of fit, so the catalog is a wonderful discovery which I will use from now on as a buyer! However, I did notice in my searches that none of my items that I am selling by these brands showed up. Does the brand name have to be in the title or can it be in the description only?

bharding says in response: 07/18/13 at 23:37:12

A lot of the catalog categories are very fresh so we’re still getting hundreds of thousands of new items added to them daily. It takes us about 7 days right now to churn through our entire inventory, so you should see your items showing up there within the next couple days. If they’re not their already.

JewelsFromTheHeart says: 07/13/13 at 04:20:16

Looks like i need to get working and brand my jewelry will it work for jewelry creativity?

bharding says in response: 07/18/13 at 23:37:39

Yep, we’ve got tons of great creative jewelry in the catalog.

jsgeare says: 07/13/13 at 07:51:50

Pretend I am a first time buyer on Bonz. What do I click, where do I go, to actually see and use the “kaleidoguide?” I can’t find a reference to it, anywhere (other than right here, of course).

bharding says in response: 07/18/13 at 23:39:14

Hey buddy! As usual, you’re right. We’re still progressively introducing it, and linking from other places is not a phase we’ve arrived at yet. I reckon we’ll probably get there within the next two weeks.

FrogAndBearCreations says: 07/13/13 at 08:00:07

I don’t think that the kaleidoguide is up and fully running yet – I think they are still working on it

PsVintageTreasures says: 07/15/13 at 09:02:26

I am trying to edit my brand. I does NOT let me edit. When I type in my brand name, goes back to my old user name. When I enter my brand info and select save a box pops up that asks if I really want to cancel my changes. Very frustrating

bharding says in response: 07/18/13 at 23:40:47

Sorry about that. A first the editing only worked in Firefox. As of yesterday, it should now work in all browsers.

DebbiesCorner says: 07/16/13 at 20:34:40

This sounds very interesting. I will have to work on this.

Boutiquely_Yours says: 07/16/13 at 23:44:58

I think this is a fantastic idea! I do a great deal of handmade items so I really love this. I have the same question as jsgear though; where does the buyer find the guide?

bharding says in response: 07/18/13 at 23:41:34

There are going to be so many great handmade brands! Can’t wait to see these brands make a name for themselves and grow however big they aspire to.

ALEXLITTLETHINGS says: 07/17/13 at 04:08:03

SOUNDS GREAT THANK YOU
