The Art of Better Online Security

At Bonanza, our users put their online security in our hands every day. We value your trust, and make it a priority to keep your account safe from unauthorized activity. In light of recent security breaches at large global retailers like Target, and with 2-factor authentication becoming increasingly ubiquitous, we realized it was time to re-examine the opportunity to improve login security at Bonanza.

YAWN

Let’s be blunt: securing your online accounts is no fun. You shimmy through complicated password rules, then your cell phone becomes the target of nagging Google 2fa codes -- modern security is not just boring, it's annoying.

In fact, an Experian Consumer Services study recently found that while most online shoppers worry about security and identity theft, very few bother to take even simple precautions to protect themselves from identity theft. For most users, the work is just too tedious.

We knew there had to be a better path to user security…to make it simple and secure, but not forget to make it fun.

Learning from the Manet failures of competitors

We started with a simple question: why must account security be so boring? Could better security be as entertaining as good art? What if security on Bonanza could be as engaging as shopping on Bonanza?

To that end, we’re pleased to announce the launch of our latest innovation – CANTCHA – based off the venerable web standard, CAPTCHA.

You’re probably already familiar with CAPTCHAs. Many consider them a lifeless exercise in drudgery:

CANTCHA is what CAPTCHA was meant to be: an AI-resistant tool that can unlock your Bonanza account while it unlocks your artistic eye. CANTCHA works because it’s unique, just like our community.

If you're a Bonanza seller, you'll experience CANTCHA security next time you login. You'll be presented with a familiar piece of internet art, like Leo Littleface:

You'll then be given an opportunity to provide a basic interpretation of the art's symbolic value, in the following prompt:

Users will have up to four chances to provide the correct interpretation. In the case of this example: Leo Littleface. Upon providing the correct answer, your IP address will be marked as "verified." Our beta tests to date suggest that the security of CANTCHA is impenetrable by even the most advanced AI, such as IBM's Watson. The "secret sauce" here is that while there is a near-infinite cache of internet art to draw from, each piece has only one universally correct meaning.

CANTCHA will initially be required only at seller login; we plan to roll it out into all other security-critical systems on Bonanza as it gains traction.

We hope you love this new security measure as much as we do. As Bob Ross would remind us: At Bonanza we don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.

Nice idea thanks.

KimberlysCandles says: 04/01/16 at 00:45:57

Ok, I’VE TRIED IT TWICE AND HAVE FAILED@!@ Why not do something that I don’t have to try and interpret. Apparently I’m not too up on internet art and what I think it is and what the correct answer is, is wrong. HOW ABOUT SOMETHING I HAVE A CHANCE OF GETTING RIGHT!!!! What is the correct answer of a pickle and olive fighting? What is the correct answer of a Big round circle hugging a little round circle?

Autumn_Offerings says: 04/01/16 at 00:47:39

I just got one, and I thought it was brilliant! Infinitely better than a CAPTCHA.

kristieswisher says: 04/01/16 at 01:17:05

I must be really dense—I didn’t interpret any of the 4 images I went through correctly before I gave up and went to “I’ll do it later” mode…now what??

WorldofBooks08 says: 04/01/16 at 01:31:25

This is not a very good way to determine security. For example I entered Leonardo DiCaprio Little face and it said it’s not a correct interpretation. How are we supposed to get into our accounts with such guesswork measures? The images are ridiculous and after 4 attempts I can’t login to my account and deal with sales?

fergiesfudge says: 04/01/16 at 02:29:00

What in the world are you trying to accomplish

rsimandl says: 04/01/16 at 02:54:07

Impenetrable by ME, too. My entries of “Man with eyes in his bread” and “bearded man” were deemed wrong by the system and I had to “confirm later.” (obviously not on THIS pic, of course).

Starfisher says: 04/01/16 at 03:16:01

You almost caught me with this one, April Fool’s!

irishonebac says: 04/01/16 at 04:09:59

Most of the photos are scary ugly. I wish I had time to guess what the “one universally correct meaning” is for the photos. I guessed wrong four times. Would never have guessed Leo Littleface for the photo above. Interpret that to mean Leo Bigface would be incorrect. Security’s great, but not when it drives you crazy to use it.

euphoria2 says: 04/01/16 at 04:10:12

Impossible to use for somebody that don`t have the right answer in another language

LeslieA21 says: 04/01/16 at 04:36:41

I am having a problem logging in my account. I am describing the photo shown and my answers are not getting accepted. I have tried different images and the same result. I love the security measures, but if the sellers cannot get in, then that is an issue. Is anyone else having this issue?

vimygirl says: 04/01/16 at 04:40:35

I can``t recognize any of your picture by the right name

themarriedmerchants says: 04/01/16 at 05:04:58

Sorry, but for all the things I enthusiastically support on this site, this one just screams utter mistake. The idea of someone deriving a very specific “answer” to a picture by trying to enter in their “interpretation” seems like an oxymoron. I have no idea what many of the pictures are, and some of them, like the picture of the painting “The Elephants” by Salvador Dali remains a mystery as to what your program is looking for. Typing the “The Elephants”, “Salvador Dali”, or “The Elephants by Salvador Dali” are all fair assessments and interpretations of the picture given, and yet the program says all of those interpretations are incorrect.

To further complicate this issue, is that even by clicking for a new image until the picture featured in this blog comes up and typing in the answer you have given as the correct answer (Leo Littleface), it still states that the answer is incorrect and will not work.

So was the answer given in this blog not correct? Is the program just not working correctly? What is that thought process behind the answers to the pictures? How does the answer you gave in this blog not work?

Bob Ross would be pulling his curly hair out.

joyranpaul19 says: 04/01/16 at 05:13:38

Good one…April Fool’s!!

maydamart says: 04/01/16 at 05:26:03

Oy vay. Not sure I’m liking this – that image in your post? Never would have known that answer as I’d never heard of that guy. Then I got one of a stick man and had no idea what the heck I was supposed to put in for that. Stick man didn’t work, head didn’t work…Had to get a new image.

gearseller2 says: 04/01/16 at 05:38:53

Happy April Fool’s Day to you, too

Spellvault says: 04/01/16 at 05:44:56

Worst idea ever, it doesn’t work, I even chose the interpretation for Leo Littleface and nothing, what a waste of my time. Also Humpty Dumpty didn’t work for the woman in the eggshell on the wall. Don’t you want people to access their accounts? Let’s see if this third attempt to leave a comment works.

inasattic says: 04/01/16 at 05:55:42

I just spent 15 minutes figuring out the “correct interpretation”. I ended up searching online for an interpretation, since I’ve never seen any of the images presented. If this experience is any indication, this is as bad or worse than CAPTCHA. And no I didn’t find it fun, just annoying.
If this is an April Fool’s joke, it’s a perfect example how they can backfire and be painful.

MomentsInThyme says: 04/01/16 at 06:01:46

This morning I received a heathy bowl of vegetables with your security pictures. Thank you! Keep up the good work.

TanBarn says: 04/01/16 at 06:11:34

Surly this is April Fools.

whisper4winds says: 04/01/16 at 06:41:24

I had three pictures this morning and couldn’t interpret them the way you wanted. I refuse to try to guess your interpretation of a picture to log into my account. I will leave Bonanza

TheresaB125 says: 04/01/16 at 06:44:03

this is the actor Leo DeCato

TheresaB125 says: 04/01/16 at 06:46:21

ckprof says: 04/01/16 at 06:57:27

Will sellers have to “verify” every time they log in to their account? I did so for the first time today. Does that mean my IP address is now verified by Bonanza, or just for today’s login?

skipbo3 says: 04/01/16 at 07:17:28

None of the CANTCHA descriptions I entered failed acceptance. It should not matter what I enter. How can a picture of a puppy and kitten NOT be accepted as an interpretation. Epic failure on your part. The interpretation is in the eye of the beholder not the failed attempted of the photographer or artist. So it appears I will no longer be able to sell on Bonanza over your failure of such an idiotic requirement that fails to recognize MY interpretation. If you have a pre-conceived interpretation then state it. I do not have the time nor patience to waste on your idiocy. This totally sucks. Good-bye Bonanza.

FrogAndBearCreations says: 04/01/16 at 07:29:00

the “one universally correct meaning” I would never have gotten if you had not used this picture with its meaning for me to log in. The host of pictures your using I have no freaking clue as to their “one universally correct meanings”
just glad that I could select more pictures and the leo one popped up for me

geekspride says: 04/01/16 at 07:41:43

This is not good. I can’t answer the CANTCHA even one. Please remove it, or make a regular CAPTCHA. I has not familiar with the image.

Thank you

tomwayne1 says: 04/01/16 at 07:58:39

Still amazed by the users who obviously don’t have calendars.

valdazar says: 04/01/16 at 08:04:20

Tried it & gave up after 2 tries because I didn’t know how many times until I’d be locked out of my account!
Who wants to have a guessing game to get into their account!
Showed a pic of a dog on a table.
How is a “dog on a table” not the right answer when the pic is a “dog on a table”?
Maybe try something different?
Not everyone is an artist or creative type of person – or are you trying to push all but artist / creative types out?
Whatever – if I get locked out will delete account & go elsewhere!

malobika says: 04/01/16 at 08:11:26

I do not like your security system

Madforglass says: 04/01/16 at 08:15:01

I’m having a hard time interpreting the images. None of my interpretations seem to work.

CatnuttiAgain says: 04/01/16 at 08:20:50

I was wondering what this years April Fools joke would be and at first I thought it would be cute…do a title for the CAPTCHA and then it would accept and we would see all the ideas people had for the picture when they were listed at the end of the day…WRONG. Would have been a cute idea…too bad it failed.

For those who are stumped…Just open a new window, click on My Bonanza and you can get into your account.

Howlin_Hounds says: 04/01/16 at 08:23:41

Ha ha….Happy April Fool’s Day!

bookhappy says: 04/01/16 at 08:33:59

You got me three times over and then I went, “Wait a minute, those are completely ridiculous images that nobody is going to describe in the same way. Wait a minute, it’s April 1st. HA HA.” Apparently a bit too subtle for most of the folks here.

NecktieGuy says: 04/01/16 at 08:39:02

very funny….now how do I close this April fool Screen.

Fifth_Avenue_Image says: 04/01/16 at 08:41:02

This may be THE stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in a commerce business environment. This is what happens when you put computer geeks to close to business operation. As it seems you are clueless to the term “interpretation” The definition of the term is is the act of explaining, reframing, or otherwise showing your own understanding of something. How the fuck can you reason using interpretation of a piece of artwork as a validator? The interpretation of artwork is completely suggestive you idiots!

BookbinEtc says: 04/01/16 at 08:43:45

I agree with Tom.

I’m always amazed that people get so uptight over an April Fool’s joke.

EuropeanGoodies says: 04/01/16 at 08:45:28

Yeah, Tom.
And I expected nothing less from you guys!!
giggle!

I came up with a description of one and was RIGHT! Hahaha!
Here it is:
GREAT photo of Donald Trump. A Vulture. Crap(b). Dino. Rhino. Monster. * *Happy April Fool’s day.

RedbirdRidge says: 04/01/16 at 09:57:39

lol Good one. Took me a while to “get it,” too.

DaveMinNJ says: 04/01/16 at 10:04:58

Happy April Fools Day to you too Bonanza (bharding). I thought your picture might make for a good CANTCHA as well. If we can have Leo Littleface we certainly can have Bill Bigbrain. You guys are too much. Lets keep up the great work at Bonanza but my 2 cents here: I haven’t seen any real sales/marketing innovations since my last sale which was like a year ago. Spending all that time and programming on a new sales page is only good if you have sales. Innovation and differentiation leads to more eyeballs and hopefully more sales ya know. Need more payment methods too. Said it before, will say it again, need more advertising. How about a tv ad here and there. Might work wonders. Happy April Fools to all….

karoden says: 04/01/16 at 10:13:47

Confusing to an Old Timer

USA_1ByOne says: 04/01/16 at 10:19:12

We attempted to key in the brief intepr- im sure Bonanza can better secure out the site creating this step that only their internal techs even know what keywords wer use in the CANTCHA Only sets us back.

ZiggyZool says: 04/01/16 at 10:30:12

Happy April Fool’s Day ya got me again Thanks for the hardy laugh once I realized what day it is

Goodness gracious peeps it’s all just a bit of fun. Did ya’ll just get up on the wrong side of the bed? Hey guys I really would love to see what the universal interpretations were for all the photos. I think it would be fun to know- I’ll admit I thought Leo Big Head was the right answer and surely Humpty Good Egg might work. LOL oh well Thanks for the laughs and not letting me down that you’d come up with a good one to get us all. I still miss Bizzy!

pinksquirrel says: 04/01/16 at 10:46:08

Well, I’ve failed every try. This is ridiculous, is it an April Fool’s joke? There must be something better than this. :(

Sofy'sChoice says: 04/01/16 at 10:52:28

This is right up there with Bizzy! ROFLMAO!

JuleesTreasures says: 04/01/16 at 11:01:09

Almost fell for it haha!
Happy April Fool’s Day!

AuntbeesTreasures says: 04/01/16 at 11:10:38

After obtaining image after image I finally got in. An image can have many different interpretations and I don’t like this system of security. You put an image up EX: Dog sitting on couch with a cat. So what is it. Dog loves Cat? Dog and cat share a couch? Dog and cat want to sleep? etc. I had the one with two fish with chef coats? Whatever I submitted was incorrect? Don’t like the type of game to get into my account! Need to come up with a better system!!!!!!!!!!!!

AuntbeesTreasures says: 04/01/16 at 11:14:33

So this is April Fools day and you find it necessary to play games with us! Some Bonanza members are serious about their accounts and don’t wish to play games!!!!!!!!!!! NOT APPRECIATED AT ALL. GROW UP

ZiggyZool says: 04/01/16 at 11:14:40

Woo Hoo I got one right! Soon as I saw the kitty and the beagle I typed Gotcha! LOL Getting old sucks it takes so little to make me happy. Thanks Bill

Hey if you can’t list the interpretations on the blog can you send me a B-mail with them or the article where you found them pretty please.

KJoannRussell says: 04/01/16 at 11:19:33

Fathertime says: 04/01/16 at 11:20:44

I am hoping this is Bonanzas idea of a April Fool Prank, Otherwise a Thumbs Down

billstuff says: 04/01/16 at 11:25:22

An April Fool’s joke of course. As this is a very busy day, I’m trying extra hard to find the humor. I’ll laugh about it tomorrow I’m sure.

bigtowner says: 04/01/16 at 11:37:18

Not all of the alien technology that was reverse engineered from the crashed spaceship should be used. This is a prime example. Most of us don’t spend our time using Google Images to search for mutant photos. Two factor authentication using a cell phone would be far more convenient.

OTC_Shoppe_Express says: 04/01/16 at 11:57:13

This is the most annoying security measure I have seen. Please tell me it is a joke

AllCopierParts says: 04/01/16 at 12:04:51

Isn’t everyone’s “interpretation” of something a little different? How can this be a valid method? I got one of a kid’s drawing with a guy in a tuxedo riding a T-Rex, so couldn’t my “interpretation” of this be vastly different than the “correct” answer?

AllCopierParts says: 04/01/16 at 12:05:01

How would someone, perhaps from a foreign country, or someone who has no clue who Lenardo de Crapphole actually is, actalually interpret this?

MyTexasTreasures says: 04/01/16 at 13:01:55

What a creative and secure idea/system! Mine worked easily, I got the Mom/Baby smoking tomato. The trick with this one is that you must pin it to Pinterest first, and use the Oddity board. Once pinned, the gateway to Bonanza will open and you will be signed in. I particularly like the fireworks display and sound effects when it works!

Lorriev says: 04/01/16 at 13:04:39

April Fools!

I sincerely hope this was posted as an “April Fool!” I don’t live on the INTERNET. I have never heard of Leo Littleface. I have better things to do than play stupid guessing games! Captcha was irritating enough.

sasswbe says: 04/01/16 at 13:16:41

Instead of wasting time on stupid April Fool’s joke why don’t you spend more time on answering seller’s questions and working on things to improve the site instead of wasting sellers time on stupid childish games.

HerbsHerbs says: 04/01/16 at 13:30:55

dumb. Let us just get to work!

EmbellishMart says: 04/01/16 at 13:42:06

Well, I got the kitty hugging the dog around the neck, lol. The need for increased security is necessary. This method is faster and can be easier than looking at several images and picking out all that have trees, or water, or something. Good that we have 4 chances to get our answer accepted. Hope that we all get the swing of it and that this new security feature runs smoothly.

D_Boseman says: 04/01/16 at 13:46:32

this is crazy, we have passwords for this. Don’t need more time consuming issues. Wish everyone there would just figure out how bonanza can get its sellers more traffic besides paying extra for it. Most of the sellers here get very little sales from what I read and have read over the years here. I can only speak for myself I will not keep trying to get in a account with time consuming images or trick questions .
