Essentially, book reviews are assigned by the book review editors of the journals of the two sponsoring societies, the "Journal of the American Academy of Religion" and the "Journal of Biblical Literature." Reviews appropriate to "Critical Review" are then forwarded by the editors of these journals to "CR" for further editing and styling.
