Item description
Welcome and thanks for visiting!
I am offering the Ancient Roman Emperor Constantine I the great, AE follis. Arles. 316 AD Bronze Coin.
AD comes from Latin Anno Domini meaning "In the year of Our Lord".
Constantine the Great also known as Constantine I or Saint Constantine, was Roman Emperor from 306 to 337. Well known for being the first Roman emperor to be converted to Christianity, Constantine and co-Emperor Licinius issued the Edict of Milan in 313, which proclaimed tolerance of all religions throughout the empire.
OBVERSE: IMP CONSTANTINVS AVG; laureate and cuirassed bust.
REVERSE: SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI, Sol rad., raising r. hand, globe in l.; stg. l., chlamys across l. shoulder. In ex. dot ATR Trier mint, in fields T/F.
Sol Invictus ("Unconquered Sun") was the official sun god of the later Roman Empire and a patron of soldiers.
SOLI INVICTO COMITI.----This legend, with the type of the Sun standing with right hand uplifted, and a globe in the left, occurs on brass coins of Constantine the Great----one of the relics of the old solar worship, which, like other symbols of paganism, appears on the mint of this professed convert to Christianity.
RIC VII Trier 132.
Measurement: Maximum 21 mm or 13/16".
Weight: 3.7 grams.
Condition: (VF) Very Fine, see photos.
Authenticity Guaranteed.
As a coin collector I DO NOT clean any of my coins to preserve the original patina, if you wish to clean the coin/s I will leave it up to you.
Please make sure to check my other Roman coins listed.
The coin you see in the photo is the coin you get.
Fantastic for your jewelry, craft projects, Steampunk, collage art projects or just a great addition to your ANCIENT coins collection.
