The author of this book of poems is Eizens Vevers, a Latvian poet and anti-fascist who was imprisoned in concentration camps in Salaspils and Mauthausen. Eizens Vevers was born in 1899 in Riga, into a working-class family. He participated in World War I and was a combat comrade of the famous Latvian Red Riflemen of the Twelfth Army. He played an active role in building a new life in Soviet Latvia from 1940 onwards. When the Great Patriotic War (World War II) began, he held the position of People's Education Inspector in the Valka region. In the early days of the war, he was captured by the Nazis based on treacherous denunciation. Thus began an unparalleled period of his life spent in the hellish conditions of Salaspils and Mauthausen. During his internment, Eizens Vevers not only endured immense suffering and humiliation but also became a participant in the remarkable spiritual struggle against fascism within the international Resistance movement. The embodiment of this moral victory included heroes like Lev Manevich-Starostin, Hero of the Soviet Union, General Dmitry Karbyshev, and many others who participated in the Resistance. Eizens Vevers' "Poetic Diary" is fundamentally documentary in nature. However, his poems convey the idea of the eternity of life, the unwavering commitment to a new social and political order, and the idea of internationalism through poetic means. "Plant roses in the cursed earth" symbolizes the transformation of the devastated land into a blooming garden, the transmission of the spirit of humanity to new generations, and the hatred of fascism.
