Item description
Another fantastic find from Uniquitees! At the same estate sale we found an Estonian spoon, comes this beauty from Odessa (Ukraine). We were able to narrow down the maker on this one but the assayer was not found. As the silversmith (Vasily Matveyevich Lapshin) only appeared to work for 10 years from 1852-1862, we can infer the spoon was made at some point. The year is unfortunately been worn off or rubbed off. The Odessa mark was in use at this time and since it was found with another similar spoon of the same size (but from a different maker) that was dated 1856, weeks ago are reasonably sure in our supporting findings. In other words, it all fits together like a jigsaw puzzle.
The spoon itself is long at 8.5 inches and weighs 65 grams (just over 2 Troy ounces). It has seen use and the spoon bowl has some dings and dents that again can be forgiven for being 160+/- years old.
A wonderful collectible for those collecting Russian silver. And please note the purity mark of .875 (84/96 Zolotniks).
Will ship USPS with tracking to winning buyer
