Mario Gordillo (1940-2022), Ecuadorian. Gordillo's paintings create a universe where reality and fantasy coexist. A subtle eroticism often permeates his works, which display harmony and skillful draftsmanship.
Gordillo was born in 1940 in Latacunga, capital of the Cotapaxi province in the Ecuadorian highlands. At the age of 19, in 1960, he arrived in Cali after crossing dusty roads on the Pan-American Highway with the hope of making his childhood dream come true: to be a painter.
?I wanted to go to Mexico because it was the epicenter of the arts and avant-garde in the Americas,? says the artist. The promise was to stop in Cali on the way to Mexico, but ?55 years have passed since then, and I never left. Cali captivated me,? he maintains.
Omar Díaz Saldaña, director and editor of the magazine ¿Que esta mirando? (What is he looking at?), comments on the artist: ?In his cozy attic in the San Antonio neighborhood, amidst sketches, paintings, prints, and his press, which has been his faithful companion since the graphic arts boom in Cali, Gordillo vindicates drawing as the essence of his work, pointing out how lines and strokes modulate and guide the movement and undulation of color.?
Gordillo's work, Díaz Saldaña adds, "represents the characters, both men and women, in theatrical settings, where the scenery, color, and compositional elements harmoniously converge in the dramatic development of the scene."
Mario Gordillo emphasizes his concern with contemporary art; "it confronts traditional and new techniques, an encounter that suggests a profound reflection on the transformation of art today," concludes Professor Díaz Saldaña.
