Item description
This is for an incredible oil and gold leaf painting on board by the renowned Italian artist Stella Angelini signed top right and on the reverse. The image shows a lantern on a tripod stand lighting up a reliquary. Angelini's unique medium of oil on gold leaf is what provides the impossible glow of the lantern.
Angelini was known for her many commissioned works for the Italian government and the Catholic Church as well. For many years she ran her own gallery in Bologna, Italy called La Tavolozza. This piece came from La Tavolozza as marked on the back. Incredible. Angelini's work is a rare sight today.
The edges of the board show wear and some of the thicker paint has nicks.
WIKI:
Stella Angelini was born in Cento, Italy on February 22, 1922, and died in Rome on June 6, 1995. She is remembered as an Italian painter and sculptor. During the 1950s she worked tirelessly in oil on canvas under the direction of the master painter Otello Mombelli. During the 1960s she worked in Bologna running a permanent art gallery in the central Via dei Musei called "La Tavolozza."
Subsequently she moved to Rome where she worked steadily and held solo exhibitions in various locations outside of Rome including Milan, Bormio, and Capri. She consistently received diplomas and honors but the highest recognition of her work came from the President of Italy Giovanni Leone who in December 1972 awarded her the medal of Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for her work at the Marzabotto War Memorial which included two large gold-leaf mural frescoes and eight bronze-leaf statues.
Throughout her career as a painter she experimented with various techniques. Her most famous medium is oil paint on gold leaf which she also used in commissioned paintings for both churches and private salons. Later, as she was also a skilled restorer, she worked for several years traveling to various churches on commission.
Her own significant works include two altar pieces at the church of Ravenna, four bas-reliefs at the Church of S. Pietro in Vasto and a statue at the Shrine of the Fallen of Oltremare in Bari, Italy.
