Item description
German Silver Soldered Mesh Purse Hangs 12 1/2"L x 6"wide Victorian
Great condition no mono
Marked German Silver Soldered Mesh on the inside of both sides of frame.
During the period German Silver was usually 800 silver in general but when "marked" German Silver it is defined as a silver-white alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel. Unless a seller shows you a sterling mark, this type of purse is Not 925 Sterling Silver.
Purse collectors
Value as a period German piece, antique and hand engraved designs on frame.
I tested the inside and the solution kept turning white not green. I scratched a corner onto my test stone and tested it and it still turned white but I know it is not sterling. Some restoration with jeweler's wire on the bottom four loops on each side of the frame but well done. No holes nor visible bends in the links. Purse snaps shut firmly. The tip of the ball latch tested green with the test solution meaning not sterling nor 800 silver on the balls.
Handle chain links appear to be brass and were silver plated at one time. The ball latches appear to be also brass, showing thru where the balls rub together, so it appears to be plated.
Please email if questions. Difficult to find these in such good condition. Also see my black antique glass bead purse with brass frame very ornate Victorian or earlier, remnants of silk lining.
Bag, handbag, purse, clutch, dance purse, chainmail, mail, metal purse.
