?Tarzan of the Apes" Edgar Rice Burroughs New York: A. L. Burt Company, ca 1920 [1914]. 8vo., 401 pages + 4 pages of ads. A fine copy in publisher?s green cloth stamped in black ink on the front cover and spine, without corner or edge wear. Interior pages are clean, no writing in the book, internal gutter hinges are firm and unbroken nor cracked. The front cover has the rectangular embossment that was present on the first edition of ?Tarzan of The Apes? published by McClurg in 1914, of which that company leased the printing plates and dies to the Burt Company that printed the book for a number of years, later printings did not have the front cover embossment, had some damaged type and used thinner paper. The next printing went to Grosset Dunlap about 1928, reset the type and used a different dust jacket design. The dust jacket is rather remarkable, a few chips as shown and without tape as often seen when a dust jacket is present. The jacket in this book is clean and attractive using the same jacket design by Arting as in the first edition. The dust jacket will have an archival removable Mylar protector.
