Item description
Unsigned on the front, but composition is consistent with other Sargent paintings/studies. The lettering painted "Mark Twain" and "Sargent 88" on the reverse side is similar to Sargent's own lettering formations constructed in his other signatures. Please reference the similarities from some of his other works shown in photos provided with this listing. The piece for sale here was recently discovered at a Nebraska estate. Excellent! Condition reflects age - see photos for areas of missing paint, darkened varnish, some edge wear, etc. The painting is not mounted in the provided frame, and fits loosely in it. This piece would be more beautiful with the old varnish removed and some restoration. The painting measures approximately 14" x 16" without the frame.
1888 was the same year Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) and fifteen others co-founded the Players Club in New York. The Club commissioned Sargent to paint member Edwin Booth, Hamlet actor and older brother to John Wilkes Booth, in 1890. The Booth portrait was sold to the Amon Carter Museum in 2013. Also in 1890, Sargent completed a portrait of Clemens at the Onteora Club, which had been established in 1887. The completed 1890 Clemens portrait was last on display at the Clemens Hartford House.
Prior to his 1887 return to the United States and subsequent work with the Players Club, Sargent worked in various locations around Europe and England. For several years, Sargent shared a studio in Paris with James Carroll Beckwith. Beckwith was born a block and a half from Clemens in Hannibal, and was often referred to as Hannibal's second most famous citizen.
