This piece was created during the third year (423 AD) of the Nan Bei Dynasty (420-589 AD) in China. It was commissioned by a devout Buddhist, Zhangfa, who – along with his wife – wished to popularize and spread Buddhism throughout China.

The figure is that of a Bodhisattva, an enlightened being who chooses to remain on earth to help others reach Nirvana. Part of the inscription also mentions “ Dharma Realms ” which is part of the beliefs of Mahayana Buddhism, the dominant Buddhist theology in China.

One thought is to see if you local college has an Asian Department. Many times a professor will use an item such as yours for a lesson for the class.

I don’t know a chinese interpretor but something you could consider is to do a search for chinese antiquities dealers or a museum that deals in chinese pieces and send an email with very clear pictures and ask for help. Even if they can’t help you they may be able to suggest who to go to. I also think it depends on what information you are looking for. Most WON’T give a value but may be able to help you with the writing. You might have to try a few before you get a response.
