Language problem!

Does anyone know where I can find a Chinese interpretor. I have a piece of art in my [URL removed] Vera246 that I would really appreciate some information on. It is in the old Chinese format on the back of the stele listed for $2,000,000.00. It is not for sale at present but could not figure out a way to place an open listing.

Thanks to all who at least look and try to help!….. Vera

And a BIG thank you to Dena @ jdsgiftshack for the tip to place my request for info here.

Hi, it’s my pleasure to “translate only” the information shown on this piece in order to provide to the museum or appraiser of your choice for finalization. I am certain that they will be “honored” to assist with any future followup inquiries you might have….+hanK yoU, Monty

This piece was created during the third year (423 AD) of the Nan Bei Dynasty (420-589 AD) in China. It was commissioned by a devout Buddhist, Zhangfa, who – along with his wife – wished to popularize and spread Buddhism throughout China.

The figure is that of a Bodhisattva, an enlightened being who chooses to remain on earth to help others reach Nirvana. Part of the inscription also mentions “ Dharma Realms ” which is part of the beliefs of Mahayana Buddhism, the dominant Buddhist theology in China.

One thought is to see if you local college has an Asian Department. Many times a professor will use an item such as yours for a lesson for the class.

I don’t know a chinese interpretor but something you could consider is to do a search for chinese antiquities dealers or a museum that deals in chinese pieces and send an email with very clear pictures and ask for help. Even if they can’t help you they may be able to suggest who to go to. I also think it depends on what information you are looking for. Most WON’T give a value but may be able to help you with the writing. You might have to try a few before you get a response.

Good luck in your hunt.

Thank you all for your asstance. We don’t have the money to travel so if you know where we could find an answer to the Stele’s authenticity without sending the piece thru the mails (you know how dependable they are) , It would be greatly appreciated. We don’t know who to trust.

Sincerely, Vera

It seems to me that you can contact online with some linguist who is studying the history of the Chinese language. Moreover, students are always happy to help for a small amount for practice or research.

Hi, Vera! I suppose you can use an online translator. They have a lot of modern features inside. I mean translating from the photo or voice recording. That is very easy. I will also ask my friend from China. I remember she told me that she’d passed one of the best English courses from [URL removed] . Maybe she will be able to help you!
