Fradulent claim using stripe - charged $15 dispute fee and cost of item

A buyer claimed the order on Bonanza was fradulent (didn’t recognize the charge) and disputed it with their credit card. Stripe returned their purchase price plus charged me a $15 dispute fee. So I’m out over $70 plus the buyer got to keep the item. So all totaled I’m losing $100.

I don’t understand if Stripe allowed them to purchase the items (all safety checks passed…CVC code, billing address match, etc) how they could tell me I accepted a fradulent order. They were the ones who did all the checks!

I’m hoping I’ll be able to get something back since the purchase was July 1 and the fraud claim was October 3. By law you only have 60 days to dispute a charge on your credit card so I’m not sure how the buyer can claim fraud over 90 days later. Plus I’ll submit tracking info, etc. But I still think I’m out the $15 dispute fee.

Anyone have tips when submitting “compelling evidence” to Stripe for a dispute?

So I’m cancelling Stripe. I can’t afford to use them. So be aware, Stripe charges $15 dispute fee and buyer gets to keep item!

I had this happen via Amazon payment once but I was given notification first and responded. Plus I personally emailed the buyer. She made an honest mistake and did not realize what the charge was for and cleared things up for me. Thanks, I will not be using stripe then. Can you contact the buyer….

Did the “buyer” contact you in any way after payment to request shipping to a different address that Stripe would normally have vetted during their payment processing? If so, that brings up red flags and may indicate use of stolen credit card (or shipment to alternative address used by buyer). If not, you may be able to get item shipped back to you by the buyer claiming fraudulent use of their credit card. After all, they are in receipt of items they supposedly didn’t order. However, expect to pay for return shipping to get your item back.

No conctact from the buyer at all. I shipped to the address provided on the Stripe “payment” which also matched the Bonanza order.

I googled the buyers name and address and it shows it’s her current address. I think she is the one committing fraud!

Just be advised that not only Stripe has the dispute charge. Just got a message from Paypal that as of a date (Nov I think) they are changing TOS to have a dispute charge also added. You either accept it (with a gun to your head) or you cancel your account with them. What a racket.

I received an update of TOS from Paypal but haven’t read it yet. Thanks for the info. To sell here we have to take Paypal so we are stuck with them. Either close up shop or accept. A racket indeed.

How much is PayPal’s TOS? If it is not the sellers fault I would hope PayPal would not give a final TOS to the seller. Yikes.

All CC processors have a fee. If a buyer does a chargeback on Ebay or Etsy or anywhere, you’ll pay the chargeback fee. When I had a retail store, we paid 20.00 for chargebacks.

I believe a lot of CCs, and PayPal, allow customers to file a claim up to 180 days! It stinks, but that’s what they do.

Unfortunately, there are some dishonest buyers! So far have dealt with two, one left negative feedback after sending threats, they keep the product, and plus got their money back. They claim an item is broken damaged during shipment and want a replacement sent right away without returning the product. So therefore in my return policy, clearly stats pictures of damaged goods must be received within 3 days of delivery to receive exchange or refund! If the buyer has nothing to hide, they should send pictures immediately without disputing any further.

This happened to me on eBay! Buyer disputed through their credit card not recognizing charge! Lucky enough a month before they opened a dispute through eBay stating the item not received when tracking showed they received and signed for the product. All this information was kept and sent over to PayPal, and I did not lose out on the money!

All it takes is a couple of bad dishonest buyers to mess up good sellers! It is getting to be awful on any marketplace for sellers, especially with feedback! Buyers do not leave feedback when they are satisfied with your product and service, only the bad apples leaves negatives because they do not get there way!
