How can you tell if you have an authentic louis vuitton handbag?

I have a beautiful Louis Vuitton Handbag, but I am not sure if it is authentic. On the inside it is stamped into leather Louis Vuitton with a number and made in france. The inside of the bag has a soft leather linning.
What can I look for to know for sure if this is a real Louis Vuitton bag?
Thanks for any help with this ♥

It’s great that you’ve asked because it is imperative that all Designer items be authenticated prior to selling them. This is Federal law and of course observed here on Bonanzle.

Offhand, LV uses a date code inter-factory system that is not imprinted anywhere near the LOUIS VUITTON made in… stamp imprinted into the leather. It’s usually embossed into the alcantara lining (not real suede, LV does not use real suede) or imprinted on a leather tab that is often under a pocket, in a pocket, or under a D ring, depending on style. LV never uses their LV logo along with their LOUIS VUITTON made in… imprint, never. If you see the larger LV logo above the imprint, it’s a fake. Only the Epi leather line uses the large LV on the front of the bag, and it’s not with the imprint.

There are so many variables that only a series of clear close up pictures would help us determine if your bag is authentic or not. However, if you are planning to sell your bag, a professional, paid authentication by CarolDiva.com who will supply you with an email as proof would be the best way to go.

As wonderful as MyPoupette has been in the past, they have been experiencing some problems in the last year or two, with very slow authentications, or sometimes accepting payment without providing their service. I’m sincerely hoping that these issues have been resolved as I’ve used them in the past as well.

Good luck. :o)

Before anyone sends money to Mypoupette for authentications, they might want to research on the downslide of MP’s reputation. They’ve lost their previous good reputation by accepting payment for authentications and not providing the services. In the last couple of years, many buyers and sellers have had to resort to filing chargebacks because MP was unresponsive.

The purse forum and the ebay purse board have numerous posts on the subject.

While it is true that LV uses date codes, bear in mind the [URL removed]

1. Older LV’s have differently formatted date codes, i.e. not the 2 letters followed by 4 numbers. Fashionphile.com has excellent resources – look for the “Research a Bag” link at the bottom of their Home Page. The specific info about LV date codes is right [URL removed]

2. Counterfeit LV bags (unless they are really bad counterfeits) also have date codes. Sometimes the fakes have “give-away” discrepancies – the bag may say it was made in France but the letters are not correct for France; The bag might be a design that came out in 2005 and have a 2001 date code, etc. However the more expensive fakes (mirror image or A+++ fakes)can have correct date codes. IRL, the bag will have mistakes elsewhere and not come close to the “real deal” in looks or quality.

Always remember [URL removed] While an obvious error can tell you the bag is a counterfeit, the converse is NOT true….The PRESENCE of any particular component does NOT mean the bag is authentic.*

The eye of experienced LV collectors to whom you have given adequate photographs along with knowledge of some general LV facts is what you will need for starters. If those do not give you your answer, you will need Caroldiva or another professional authenticator, as Scottyz pointed out.

LV sales personnel will not give you a written authentication. However, if you go to an LV store with your handbag to get an estimate for replacing the lining, the straps, the zipper – anything at all, you’ll find out in a hurry if your bag is authentic! :) You can bring in a 20 year old LV and have it repaired. If you bring in a fake, LV personnel might confiscate it – They surely won’t repair it.

Hope this is helpful. Good Luck!

Just make sure that you observe their posting etiquette and the format everyone is asked to use. And they, for some reason I can’t explain, don’t like to authenticate for sellers. Just saying.

You also have to register, but it’s no biggie.

all i know is that it has to have the date code inside i believe it has 2 letters and 4 numbers…but you can also take it to a Louis Vuitton store and they can tell you if it authentic by looking at the date code…Hope this helps!! =)

I know mine is real that I’m selling, I bought it at Saks fifth Avenue.
Had a new lining put in at the LV Boutique here in Naples. They told me my bag looked brand new. I would say if its vintage, 25+ years old, its probably authentic. That was before China go into the knockoff [URL removed]

Hi; There is a reliable authentication service that I am presently using for my Coach bags. They are accepted as a valid source of authenticating by PayPal, to validate your item in case of a dispute. They charge a reasonable fee for their services. I always felt that you get what you pay for.

They are called ‘My Poupette’. Just do a google search and you will find them.

There is also ‘Caroldiva’. Both of these are accepted as reliable authentication sources by PayPal and most online selling sites. They both specialize in LV, especially.
