Understand that there is a difference in what Americans consider a Kimono and what the real thing is. I lived there for several years. The Everyday Robe style Kimono is much different from the formal dress kimono that many Japanese women have made for them. A formal Kimono is purchased at great expense, and can cost thousands of dollars. It typically consists of three layers of garments along with an Obi sash. The shopping district in Tokyo had some of the greatest Kimono tailors. This was were I got to see many different styles and creations that were jaw dropping.

The difference can best be compared to buying a pair of curtains at Walmart and a custom made pair of designer drapes from an interior design company. A real kimono is valued much higher than the average everyday style. Kimonos are worn for special occasions only because of this.

Do your research first. It helps to have a Japanese National that can advise you as well.

Hi, try calling a local university near you that teaches japanese or asian history. I have done that before while researching something in Japan and have discovered many educators willing to help. Good luck

There are many museums on the West Coast that deal in Japanese items, many being from WWII. I think I would look there first for information on the kimono. Some were made by what are now famous designers, I have been told, so do your homework on it. Your “2 silk pieces” is a little vague at the moment for me to figure what direction one should point you in, but there must be a “Fabric Forum” somewhere that can assist.

There is a store in my town that specializes in kimonos. This is all the guy does and apparently buys and sells internationally. (Wabasha, MN home of the grumpy old men movies)

I can’t remember the name right now so I’ll check it out tomorrow and get back with a name and information.
