Product description: In this book for Lenten reading Charles Duell Kean presents meditations on the cross and the "seven last words from the cross." He speaks clearly to laypeople of all denominations when he applies these words to the human problems of individuals and families.... Mr. Kean first interprets the cross in light of "The Tragedy of Human Pretension." In each of the seven remaining chapters he considers one of the "last words" of Jesus from the cross. Forgiveness is explained as a gateway by which the cross becomes an inward experience. The death of the forgiven thief on his cross is a poignant illustration of the meaning of the cross for man ? the relative insignificance of his material death compared to the death of his self-pretensions. Jesus' words to his mother and his disciples show men their need to follow "The Pattern of the Family" in every human relationship. The "cry of dereliction" reminds modern man that he too must identify with the suffering of all mankind, and Jesus' admission of thirst points to participation in "Life's Continuing Struggle." The last words from the cross show a reversal of the world's normal system of values as we take "Our Part in Victory" and proceed to "Triumphant Faith." In his evaluation of present-day man, the author has in a sympathetic manner shown a true reflection of humankind today. But he has not simply pointed a finger at it; he points instead to the cross and shows how to understand it in relation to the problems of today ? a triumph over this world and any eternal answer to the natural chaos of human thinking. --- from book's dustjacket
