Item description
Measured approximately 2.5 cm in diameter.
1968 the final year of Canada's transition from silver to nickel in its coinage. As a result, 1968 dimes exist in two different compositions
50% Silver: These coins weigh 2.33 grams
100% Nickel: These coins are slightly lighter, weighing about 2.07 grams and are magnetic.
Mints: The coins were minted in both Ottawa, Canada, and Philadelphia United States, to manage production pressure.
The primary way to distinguish between the silver and nickel versions is by using a magnet; the nickel coins will attract a magnet.
The Philadelphia and Ottawa issues can also be differentiated by the edge reeding (grooves); Philadelphia coins have square-bottomed grooves, while Ottawa strikes have pointed deep "V"-reeding.
Design: The coin features the second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin on the obverse (the side shown in the image), with the inscription "ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA" (Elizabeth II, Queen by the grace of God). Bluenose schooner.
