Item description
KENNECOTT CHINO MINES
SANTA RITA / HURLEY SMELTER
SANTA RITA NM
1 Mixed COPPER 13.6oz
"Smelter Splash" Peeled off of a hydraulic hose inside the smelter house.
Comprised of an undetermined mix of metals, copper, gold, molybdenum, silver,
and
whatever else was in the smelter pot when the anodes were poured.
Unknown origin date.
(Kennicott Chino Mines)
From Hurley / BAYARD NM
These are random pieces of copper that "boiled" out of the Smelter Crucible when pouring the 740# Copper T-shirt Anodes that were then loaded onto a train car for refinement at another facility.
These contain all of the raw metals that were floating in the top of the smelter pot and "Perked" out as the pot was moved to the pour, or splashed out when the "Pour" was in process.
Peeled off random items inside the smelter and Taken home by Mine Employees.
These were Referred to as, "LUNCHBOX COPPER," because they were taken home at random in employee's lunchboxes, with,
(or without), management's permission.
These have ALL THE ORIGINAL metals that were present in the ore that went into the smelter for that particular crucible pour. These may contain, (in addition to copper), Silver, Gold, Molybdenum, Zink, and other metals....
The Smelter was closed in the early 2000's
Kennecott sold out to Phelps Dodge in the 1980's, and they sold to Freeport MacMoran in the early 2000's.
Neither Phelps Dodge, nor Freeport ever gave these away to the best of my knowledge.
