Shipping costs

Hi!
I’ve been getting an education about shipping costs over the last few weeks, since we opened our Bonanza booth. I’m aghast at how much it is!
After 4 sales we realized that we needed to change a lot of the shipping fees we had set on items. Some of them, we would have actually ended up paying more for the shipping than we charged for the item in the first place.
So yesterday I went through all of the items in our booth and changed the shipping fees. However, when I priced the shipping at what it will likely actually cost to ship, it seems so high and I feel like customers seeing those fees would balk at purchasing. I know I would have before this. I had no idea how much it costs to ship these days. I guess I’ve been so used to Amazon shipping prices, I thought they reflected trends in shipping costs overall.

Now my partner and I are somewhat discouraged and rethinking the types of product we can offer for sale online. It seems like jewelry and socks and other things that can ship in an envelope are about the only things one can ship affordably.

So far, all of the items we’ve sold were under 2 pounds. From everything I’ve read, and from what the rep at Goin’ Postal told me, our best possible rate for shipping items that are under 2 pounds and a certain box size is Priority mail. But each item we’ve sold has cost between 15.25 and 17.00 to ship. That’s in what they call a “medium” box!

So, I have a pair of extremely inexpensive Danskin shoes up for sale for 7.99. If they sold, by the time I shipped them, it would cost me almost twice what I sold them for. The shoes sell brand new for less than the 15.25 it would cost me to ship them. I feel like I want to just pull them from the booth, along with a lot of other items like that.

How do you all do it? How does anybody make any money when they sell something bulkier than can ship in an envelope, but is a low cost, less than 10.00, sale?

Thanks so much and kind regards,
LuLu

I was charged twice for the same sale. I already called my bank and submitted a claim. What is Bonanze trying to do? Is Bonanza a scam? I have a snapshot of the charges and wish we could upload files. 01/24/24 3556592 Shipping label assessment fees Credit or debit card REF #r11ax77e $2.00 01/24/

First off…how are you paying for shipping??? Are you using retail..if so, you are never going to make it with low weight, low cost items..

Since you are using PayPal…

After a sale..go to paypal and find the invoice..use the option “Print Shipping Label”

This will get you commericial base prices…

You will need to experiment on getting items in the smallest boxes and lightest weight possible to keep shipping costs down…

Don’t ever use a flat rate box for anything that weights less that 4 pounds (over 4 pounds and going coast to coast is probably the only time is is a good option)..you will over pay shipping costs like crazy…..it is cheaper just to go straight priority

Investigate regional rate boxes…they prices can be lower to certain areas for weight over 2 pounds…

You can ship anything up to to 15.99 ounces first class….which is usually the best price and method for items less than 1 pound.

Here is an example…

A 2 pound package..halfway across the US from me

Commerical medium flat rate costs $12.85
Priority cost (not using flat rate box) is $8.15

Also note that $8.15 is also the Priority Regional rate A costs from USPS Click n ship

In this case medium flat rate is not a good option

This also goes for up to 4 pounds

Medium flat rate is $12.85
Priority (no flat rate) $10.35
Priority Regional Rate A is still $8.15
Priority Regional Rate B is $10.65

again the medium flat rate is not the best option…

You will need to examine the size, weight and distance a package is going from you (go to USPS and study shipping zones) to determine best options…

Here is the commerical base priority pricing listing by zones

[URL removed] (scroll about 1/4 way down)

Here is how you determine what zone you will be shipping to base on your location
[URL removed]

You will get the hang of it..at first I lost loads of money on shipping too…and got way discourages…but it can be done

This is a great answer and helps so much! Thank you for taking the time to write it. I can see that I have so much to learn about shipping. I also can see that I’ll need to change my shipping settings for all those items again.

LuLusFancy says: February 01, 2018

We need to buy a shipping scale too.

TrinketBox says: February 01, 2018

yes…scale is a must..get one from PO…

I agree with using the Region A and Region B boxes. I very rarely use a flat rate box but I do use alot of the padded flat rate envelopes. The Region A & B Boxes have to be ordered through USPS.com. They cannot be obtained at the Post Office.

I ordered good shipping scales from Groupon and an assortment of free boxes from USPS. Thank you all so much for the education!

It pains me when I see people at the PO putting stuff in the Priority Flat Rate Boxes to ship items that can go in another size Priority box most likely at a much cheaper price. Flat Rate BOXES should only be used for HEAVY stuff. The Regional A & B boxes are money savers and each come in 2 different sizes. I recommend you order these (and other FREE Priority boxes and envelopes ~ They have around 50 or so variations of Priority items) from the USPS site under shipping supplies. DONT order the ones with PREPAID Postage, just the FREE ONES. All you need is to setup an account is a unique ID and password and they will ship these Priority boxes and envelopes FREE to your door. Mind you that you are supposed to use them for mail use only and not as storage or moving boxes (as I have seen visiting many garage sales).

Educate yourself on the weight restrictions on the Regional boxes That go Zone (distance) shipping at the 2 pound or 4 pound Priority Rate. Another handy tip is to order some Priority 1096L Priority boxes and you can put whatever small HEAVY stuff in that box and then get the PADDED Flat Rate Priority (bubble) envelope and that 1096L heavy box slips into the Padded F/R bubble envelope like a glove and ships at the flat rate, not weight and distance shipping costs.

Now many of the items like the Regional and Padded Flat Rate BUBBLE Envelope are not supported on the Bonanza LABEL print (been asking for that for years now) so you need to go to ship them thru the USPS site and then use your Paypal to pay for the label cost to get the commercial based pricing. Dont pay for these types of containers at the PO COUNTER as you will pay more than thru the PO online site.

Buying a scale is a must but the ones at the PO are much more than you can buy them on the Auction site (that will remain nameless). Dunno if any sellers on Bonanza sell scales. The one I have is named DigiWeigh and is extremely accurate.

With all the yearly increases the USPS puts thru on shippers every January for years on end, it is getting more difficult to squeeze savings out of the PO now but there are still a few ways left if you use some of the hints above. Shipping is a REAL Expense and many buyers minds have been conditioned that shipping should be FREE since they get it from the big businesses but they forget that the actual shipping charges are actually hidden in the price if Free shipping is offered (or they are paying a hefty charge like a Prime membership to get the Free shipping).

Using a priority box and putting it in envelope is actually a PO no-no…they can deliver packages with postage due for miss use of USPS priority packaging (the cost of the package if mailed alone plus the cost of the flat rate envelope)…I got charged that way the PO when an ebay seller did that

ccmom says: February 01, 2018

however, scotty stuffers from bubble are especially made to fit the USPS flat rate padded envelope

ccmom says: February 01, 2018

from bubblefast

LuLusFancy says: February 01, 2018

Thank you all for your great advice and support! I ordered Digiweigh shipping scales tonight and an assortment of boxes from USPS. I looked at the Scotty Stuffers, but they seemed pricey to me too. I have a box cutter and an excess of regular boxes though. ;) Thanks again all!

Atomicdiner says: February 02, 2018

ccmom, I never said cutting a Priority box and sticking in an envelope, I said use the 1096L PRIORITY box and sticking it in the PRIORITY Padded F/R Envelope to ship at a Priority Flat Rate instead of weight and distance shipping. 1096L box just gives items extra support in F/R env..

LuLusFancy says: February 02, 2018

I’m interested in this, for sure. Technically it should be fine to do that, since you are, in fact, shipping it Priority Flat Rate. Right? This seems to be a solution that is far more affordable than buying Scotty Stuffers. Those things are more than 1.50 each.

ccmom says: February 02, 2018

didn’t say anything about cutting a priority box either….I just told what happened when a buyer put a priority box inside a priority envelope…I got postage due for both, the box and the FR padded envelope….

ccmom says: February 02, 2018

Check around…if you buy scotty stuffers bulk then they cost a lot less…

Atomicdiner says: February 02, 2018

Must have been a bored postal clerk that checked what was inside the Priority F/R Bub envelope (unless they were looking to steal something). I do 1096L in the Pri Bub env all the time without issue. To quote the PO, “if it fits it ships” and whatever fits in the flat rate goes at that flat rate.

I was LOST without my legit, non cooking scale ($19 on ebay). I had a huge problem initially with shipping. It’s an extra step, but I weigh/measure everything, I have a list weights of mailers + packing, add that to it, and use calculated shipping.

If offering free shipping, USPS has a calculator, use zip for area far away from you to get an idea of costs and if it’s worth it. Shipping is very expensive, lots of people offer free shipping which makes it hard to compete. But, if it’s over 15.99 oz, it’s going to cost a pretty penny and you may need to up the cost of your item to cover it.

The regional boxes are a lifesaver once you figure it all out. You can order all your priority FR boxes, regional & mailers for free online at usps.

Shoes are definitely a difficult one!! They have a specific priority shoe box but it isn’t flat rate so depending on where it’s going, it can be very pricey.

I have known sellers put as much as possible in the padded flat rate envelope which is $7.10 (commercial) $7.25 retail. I have managed to get sandals in one of these, but I doubt regular shoes would fit.

The bubble mailer is usually the only flat rate I use for heavy things, unless it’s too big. I agree with Trinketbox, first class & regional and print labels through PayPal.

Another [URL removed] check USPS site for first class requirements. If your item happens to be less than 1/4" thick, it’s even cheaper, and if it qualifies for media mail, it’s super cheap. BUT check the RULES on MEDIA mail! Even throwing in an extra piece of candy can disqualify it.

You’ll get the hang of it, it takes some time. A scale and measuring tape is going to be your best friend!!

Thank you so much for the advice, the support, and the words of encouragement! I ordered Digiweigh shipping scales tonight. They were affordable at Groupon.

For low-cost sales, I only buy low-weight products and I like to ship them as first class mail to keep the shipping price from being a sticker shock. If it is a higher priced item and low in weight, I still ship as first class mail but I purchase UPIC insurance because I trust them more than I do the USPS with their insurance (priority mail comes with insurance automatically). I had to use UPIC a few times and they were very professional and did back the insurance I purchased. I will even purchase UPIC insurance when shipping as priority for a higher priced item.

So, this is how I handle first-class mail, which has worked well for me over the years.

For a pound up to 2 pounds (but not over) I will ship priority mail but just in a regular priority box 99.99%. Of course, for heavier packages flat rate priority boxes work well as you know.

BUT I do make sure that the item I am purchasing has sold on the internet for a decent price when shipping 1 to 2-pound packages via priority mail. Even between 1 to 2 pounds, the price goes up pretty hefty when I ship to Texas. One of the main reasons I look at what the item has sold for on the internet is because I tend to lower the price on priority and eat part of the cost (I do this on first class too). So in a sense, yes, I am eating part of the shipping cost but in a sense, I am not because I am able to get a decent enough price for the item to cover this.

For anything above 2 pounds, I usually state that the listing ships via parcel select rather than priority, as long as parcel select is still less expensive. I know parcel select takes longer but seeing the shipping price lower rather than higher is a positive to me. Plus, I state in my listings that the shopper can email me for a shipping price if they prefer a different method of shipping. So that covers that and they have an option. BUT, if the item can sell for a nicer price, I will do a priority shipping price rather than parcel select. Regardless, I always state in my listings the shopper can email for a different shipping service.

I choose to set my shipping prices individually rather than using the shipping calculator for the reasons I mentioned above. Plus, I like to offer a hefty shipping discount to the shopper if they are purchasing more than one item from me. I have had some multiple item sales and I did definitely eat part of the cost of shipping. I was still happy with my bottom line profit though because like said, they purchased multiple items. Having like items in my booth helps with this.

I see that we have some of the same logic when looking at what we can sell the item for compared to the cost of shipping it.

It takes a balancing act all the way [URL removed] Cost of the item and what it can sell for are the biggest indicators of what to do with shipping. I never used to have a cell that would get on the internet. I’m glad I do now because whereas before when I did not have the cell to see what items sold for, I’d get about 75% of what I picked up to look at. Now I only get about 10% of what I pick up to look at, sometimes less.

[URL removed] I’m not sure if you offer Amazon as a payment method. But if someone were to purchase from you through Amazon, you could still create your shipping label on paypal. Just log into Paypal and look for Multiorder shipping on your left, click on that and follow the prompts. Then bingo, you can create your label.

I don’t offer Amazon as payment, but maybe I should. Yet another thing to learn about. :D Thank you so much again, Sharon! :) I think a lot of our items may be better in a brick and mortar shop. We are on a waiting list for one now. :)

As mentioned above you need a good quality accurate digital postal scale. Then you can know what and how you will ship before you finalize the listing. I keep empty different size boxes and padded bubble envelopes ready and close so when I am listing I can try and know by the scale what the shipping is going to be before I list. I concentrate on items of 3 pounds or less, using First Class Package or Media when possible. I just today finished editing my shipping on over 2000 items due to the recent Over the Top Postal increases on First Class Package. It took hours over a week. I hope the Post Office is not Killing the Golden Goose.

Another point I want to make is educate your customer to the high cost of mailing, Most do not realize the high cost due to the big players hiding the cost in the price. Be open and honest, and explain there is No Free Shipping only reasonable and fair shipping.

Thank you so much for the advice. I will check out your listings to get examples of how best to explain shipping costs in listings. I feel like Amazon has absolutely created an expectation of free to very cheap shipping from folks. Thanks again! :)

Atomicdiner says: February 02, 2018

I too try to educate buyers on ship costs. Even a ONE ounce PACKAGE cost more than 5 times the cost of a First Class Stamp! I believe to get some free shipping on Amaz, you need to have a Prime membership which in itself cost $$$ and lots of buying to re-coop your ‘Free’ ship costs. No Thanks.ci

Atomicdiner says: February 02, 2018

Also, tread lightly on Amaz pay (I dont use it). While some love it, I have read too many horror storys that make Amaz Pay look worse than PayPal (if that is even possible).

LuLusFancy says: February 02, 2018

Well, I do have a Prime membership…kind of got it by accident, when I forgot to cancel it after doing the try for 30 days promo. I’ll read about it. Thanks again! :)

Fathertime – “reasonable and fair shipping” – that is great! Thanks. I
’m going to borrow that.
