CARNOTITE is a special variation of uranium mineral, because it has been known during the past century that some carnotite rocks also contain a recoverable portion of RADIUM, which can be up to three million times more radioactive than uranium itself. Radium glows in darkness, and from the 1920s until the 1970s, a radium-based liquid paint, UNDARK, was applied to numerals on wristwatch to make them glow-in-the-dark. Women employees at the American Radium Co. painted the watch dials, and were encouraged by their employer to lick the end of the paintbrush to keep the tip tightly pointed; they ingested small but toxic amounts of the radium substance, harming their health.
