Item description
Natural Uranium Rock
URANINITE
Weight: 3.1 oz. Radioactivity: 34,800. CPM
(counts per minute)
This rock, with many others, was found at
Jurassic Canyon, 18 miles NW from Grants
NM, during October 2025. This was a four-
day rockhounding episode; two rock collectors
from the Minneapolis MN region joined me for
this expedition. Weather was excellent. We
rock collectors appcreciate the fact that there
are NO MOSQUITOS and NO
COCKROACHES at the canyon. The main
wildlife there are the ever-present
DIAMONDBACK RATTLESNAKES. In my
many visits to the canyon, I have only seen one
snake. Other rock collectors who accompany
me have seen two other snakes, each on
separate trips. During my 12 years at two
African universities (Univ. of Zambia, Univ.
of Malawi), I saw multiple poisonous snakes
every day, yet none over there were as large
as the Diamondback Rattlesnakes here in
the USA uranium Southwest!
During the early years, I usually
traveled alone to the canyon. More
recently, I always travel there with a visitor.
In case of a snake bite, I am not sure
whether I, at age 79, could drive the car 18
miles to the local county hospital at Grants.
I have already checked: The county hospital is
fully stocked with freshly-dated anti-venom
protective doses against rattlesnake bites.
