Item description
Natural Uranium Rock
URANINITE
(PITCHBLENDE)
Weight: 1.4 Oz. Radiation: 27,900 CPM
(counts-per-minute)
$24.00 plus $9.50 shipping
This rock was found at the Jurassic Canyon
mining area, located 18 miles NW of Grants
NM, during July 2025. It was dug out of a
giant waste rock pile, left by one of the twenty
large mines that were active from 1950 until
1989.
Here in the USA, the "Hero of Uraninite
Mining" was Charley Steen, a Texas geologist
who discovered, in 1952, a huge preserve of
uraninite rocks at the Lisbon Valley, located
40 miles S.E. of Moab Utah. Charley's mine
was named the "MI VIDA MINE," and I
visited it on a five-day rock-collecting trip
during June 2017. The entrance to this mine
appears, from outside, to be completely open
for visitors. However, 15 ft inside, there is
a floor-to-ceiling brick wall. The brick wall
was installed so that curious visitors do not
fall down any steep inclines or otherwise get
trapped inside the long-vacant mine today.
(In my case, my wife, who allows me to collect
uranium rocks, has absolutely forbidden me
to venture into any underground mine,
anywhere.)
This rock has ONE white dot, which shows
the location on the rock's surface with the
strongest radioactive response.
